How do you get to Red Hook and why doesn't it have a subway?

Red Hook is one of the few Brooklyn neighborhoods without direct subway service, a legacy of its industrial, maritime past and its position cut off from the rest of the borough by the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel approach and the Gowanus Expressway. Residents reach it primarily by bus, notably the B61 and B57, by the NYC Ferry, which offers a scenic ride to Manhattan and other stops, and by car or bike.
