# Is Gowanus safe?

Gowanus is generally considered a safe neighborhood, particularly its residential edges bordering Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, and Cobble Hill. Once a purely industrial area around the Gowanus Canal, it has rapidly transformed into a mixed neighborhood of new residential development, arts spaces, restaurants, and nightlife, bringing more activity and foot traffic. As with any changing neighborhood, some industrial blocks are quieter than others, and awareness after dark is sensible, but most of Gowanus is comfortable and improving as new residents and businesses arrive.
