The neighborhood started as an 1830s commuter town around mass-transit train lines and has witnessed waves of immigration through its history - German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Black, Latino (Dominican, Central American, Guyanese), and more recently Haitian, Jamaican, Indian, Pakistani, Korean, and Chinese. The result is wide multi-ethnic eateries and specialty shops. The 3.3-acre Evergreen Park adjoining the Cemetery of the Evergreens, plus the 4,000+ acre Jamaica Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, are the natural-area crown jewels.
