Why is Vinegar Hill called Vinegar Hill?

Vinegar Hill takes its name from the Battle of Vinegar Hill, a pivotal 1798 clash in the Irish Rebellion against British rule. In the early 1800s, a landowner developing the area named it Vinegar Hill to attract the Irish immigrants then settling in the neighborhood, who worked in the nearby shipyards and along the waterfront.
