Carroll Gardens is known for true peace and quiet within the city, tree-lined streets leading to boutiques, hip bars, restaurants, and the front gardens that give the neighborhood its name. Originally part of Red Hook, Carroll Gardens broke away in 1960 and has its own identity. Named after Charles Carroll, the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, the neighborhood was settled by Irish immigrants, then Norwegians, then Italians.
